Abstract

The inspiration behind this research project was to explore the reasons behind the continuously high number of young male suicides in Ireland, combined with the deaths of three friends, who were all under the age of twenty five that chose to commit suicide. These suicides all appeared to be due to a number of different factors or triggers contributing to each suicide. The aim of this research project is to get a greater understanding of the possible and potential risk factors contributing to suicide among young males aged from 18-25 years of age. This research will investigate and explore the relevant literature around this topic of suicide and young males through the literature review section. The method of qualitative research will be used to gain a more in-depth insight to this complex topic. This will be done by conducting semi-structured interviews with two professionals who work in the County Louth area. These professionals will both be in contact with young people who were or are at risk of suicide. This type of interviewing will give a credible representation of the attitudes, views and opinions of those vulnerable young males who were or are in contact with these professionals. The information, opinions and views that I will discover after conducting these interviews will be analysed through the method of themed analysis. This is to focus on identifying any relevant or recurring themes that may emerge in relation to the possible and potential risk factors that are contributing to suicide among young males in Ireland. I will then use this primary research from both interviews to expand on the previous information that was already detailed within the literature review and this will be detailed in the discussions of findings section. I will then finish this research project with my conclusion and any recommendations.
