Abstract

Over the past two decades Ireland has experienced remarkable growth in tourist numbers with overseas visitors reaching 6.4 million and total tourism revenue including both domestic and international tourism reaching €5.2 billion as of 2004. With the tourism industry affecting many host communities, this study presents information about the structure of the tourism industry in Carlingford / Cooley Peninsula and residents' opinions and attitudes concerning the impact of the tourism industry. Based on a survey of 80 local residents' tourism impacts were accessed using a 30 item tourism impact scale which measures belief and affect concerning the impact of tourism. With no statistical information available regarding the structure of the industry in the area; a second survey provided essential quantitative data regarding the structure of the industry to further enhance the authors understanding of residents' attitudes and opinions. According to the mean measures, the most favorable attitudes towards tourism impacts were found to be associated with the economic and the socio — cultural impacts of tourism while residents' perceived environmental matters to be somewhat indifferent. The study also identified whether there exists any significant differences between demographic variables and residents' attitudes toward the impact of tourism. Finally, areas for future research were identified by the author and can be seen in chapter seven of the dissertation. Also within this chapter the summary of the main findings and future recommendations are discussed.
