Abstract
In social care, there are certain aspects and areas that are seen to be more at risk of experiencing violence in the workplace. Violence can be experienced in three ways, physical, verbal and psychological. Each way can affect a person differently and no two people have the same reaction and resilience to violence. There are certain costs to the individual and the service provider who have experienced violence in the workplace. Violence should not be something that is anticipated whilst attending work and it is an aspect of life that social care needs to be more aware of. Violence can affect people in different ways and many are negative. In no part of the research has violence affected anybody positively, apart from instigating change in policy. Violence can affect people in ways such as but not limited to; stress, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, panic attacks and physical injuries such as broken limbs. High staff turnover is also linked with violence in social care. Service users can then tend to act out more when they are not linked with regular staff members or there is a lack of communication between staff members. Through qualitative research and the use of non-probability purposive sampling the target audience will be reached. Semi-structured interviews will be used as the method to gather data. There are certain limitations through carrying out this research. There are not a lot of Irish findings in this field and through interviews it could be found that a high level of support and good rapport with the service users mean that social care workers in Ireland do not fit into the literature that already exists.
